The utilisation concept envisages that up to three scholarship holders - young artists or academics from different art disciplines - can each live, work and present the results of their work in the "Rote Ochsen" for up to nine months.

The idea is to found a support association in order to involve a broader public in the organisation and self-presentation of the Künstlerhof. On the one hand, a varied range of artistic activities should arouse the interest of the population, on the other hand, it should also appeal to as large a circle of young artists and scientists as possible. Thus, the scholarships to be awarded should radiate a high degree of attractiveness.

The aim of the Künstlerhof is not only to offer artists from the region a working environment, but also to promote supra-regional and international cooperation and thus understanding. This means that not only the immediate results during the stay in Schleusingen are important, but also the connections that lead to long-term and far-reaching permanent influence on the artists' work.

As a rule, the grants are awarded for the period from 1 May to 31 October. In addition to artists, scholars in the respective disciplines may also apply. The Board of Trustees and the Executive Board reserve the right to specify a common theme for the scholarship holders.

The artists' courtyard has five flats, 2 spacious studios, a "larger" hall (120 seats) with an organ with two manuals, pedal and 14 stops, and a smaller meeting room (30 - 40 seats), which can also be used for concerts, exhibitions, conferences and seminars.

An amphitheatre in the courtyard and other infrastructure such as a catering kitchen, lift and sanitary facilities for the disabled complete the complex.
