Since 1989, the Artist-in-Residence Programme (A-i-R Programme) has enabled artists from the fields of visual arts, literature and composition to spend time working in Austria and abroad with the help of private and public funding. In return, the Künstlerhaus receives several guest artists from the partner institutions every year.

As part of the exchange, partner institutions send artists, writers and composers to Schwandorf every year for a stay of several weeks at the International House of Artists.

The International House of Artists consists of the main house and two separate studios. In continuous cooperation with international partner houses, the sponsoring association facilitates exchange scholarships lasting several weeks every year. A visit to the guest artists is especially worthwhile on "Open Studio Day": visitors gain an insight into the creative work and have the opportunity to talk personally with the scholarship holders.

The ensemble was realised by the Förderverein Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus e.V. and with the support of many private and public sponsors and is under the sponsorship of the association. The Förderverein Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus e.V. finances the ongoing exchange programme. Since 1994, the Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus has been a member of the network of international artists' houses, Res Artis.

About 20 visual artists, writers and composers from all over the world are guests at the International House of Artists every year. They take the opportunity to live and work in peaceful surroundings.

The artist-in-residence programme is housed in the International House of Artists, which was built under the sponsorship of the Förderverein Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus e.V.. Since 1994, it has been a member of the Res Artis network for international exchange in the visual arts and has since welcomed artists from Germany and especially from abroad. The scholarship building comprises four flats with private bathrooms and a communal lounge with a fully equipped kitchen. There is also a barrier-free flat with a bathroom and cooking facilities. Two studios for visual artists and one studio each for writers and composers are available as working spaces.

After four to eight weeks, towards the end of their stay, the guest artists are invited to an Open Studios Day to give an insight into their work.
