Maxhaus Künstlerhaus Nordhalben

Maxhaus Nordhalben is an artist residency in the Franconian Forest in Bavaria, offering artists a quiet place to live and work in a rural setting. The residency provides space for concentrated artistic work, experimentation and exchange with the local community. Artists are invited to develop their own projects and to engage with the surroundings and the people of Nordhalben.
The residency is offered in three formats: a two-week residency for €420 per person and a ten-day residency for €300 per person, both including a public presentation of the works created during the residency. A seven-day Intensive Work Residency is available for €210 per person plus a €60 cleaning fee and is intended for concentrated artistic work without a public presentation.

The Maxhaus offers seasonal accommodation for resident artists from the beginning of May until the end of September. It is located in a historic house in Nordhalben. The house has five bedrooms, including one with a double bed, a shared self-catering kitchen, a living and common room, bathroom/WC facilities and an outdoor courtyard area.

There are three working spaces: a large studio and gallery space with natural light and a shop window, a second studio directly connected to a bedroom, and an additional small working space. Wi-Fi, electricity and water are available. There is no central heating; the house is heated by a large wood-burning stove in the basement. Warm clothing is recommended at the beginning and end of the season. Pets are not permitted.

The large studio also serves as an exhibition space and can be used for public presentations of works created during the residency.The spatial structure is deliberately open and functional, supporting both concentrated artistic work and informal exchange and shared everyday life.

Maxhaus Nordhalben is located in the village of Nordhalben in the Franconian Forest (Frankenwald), Bavaria, near the Bavarian-Thuringian border. The residency is located at Lobensteiner Straße 11, within walking distance of the village centre.

Artists have the opportunity to work independently in a quiet rural environment, develop their artistic projects and engage with the local community. For two-week and ten-day residencies, a public presentation of the works created during the residency is part of the programme. The seven-day Intensive Work Residency is focused exclusively on concentrated artistic work and does not include a public presentation.

Applications are open to artists working in the visual arts. Applicants should submit information about their artistic practice and the project they intend to pursue during their stay. The selection is made by a committee. A residency requires active artistic work and openness to exchange with the local community.
