The German UNESCO Commission acts as an intermediary for foreign cultural and educational policy. It advises the German Federal Government and other public bodies on UNESCO issues, contributes to the implementation of the UNESCO programme in Germany and is responsible for public awareness activities and for providing information on all of UNESCO’s areas of work.
Since June 2026, the IGBK has once again been a member of the German Commission for UNESCO, having previously held membership until the end of 2020. Over the years, the IGBK has also regularly contributed to the DUK's Committee on Culture.
Today, IGBK continues to support, among other initiatives, the nationwide "Koalition für Kulturelle Vielfalt" of the German UNESCO Commission and co-signed the "Fair Culture Charta" of the Fair Culture Initiative in 2025.
